The Pothole Project
The Pothole Project is led by artist Madison LaVallee (sculptor) in collaboration with Jill Malouf (video artist), Michael Valiquette (photographer), and the Capital Region community. In summer 2019 a group of people were selected to fill potholes in Troy, NY with materials that relate to their practice, identity, or occupation. By “fixing” the voids in shared infrastructure, they examined the physical care of the community and highlighted social and community infrastructure. LaVallee developed the project in response to (still functioning) “Men Working” signs found on county and state roadways throughout Upstate New York. Community participants include Pamela and Lawrence LaVallee, Pilar Arthur-Snead, Megan Stasi, Brian Barlow, Jammella Anderson, Jack Magai, Azuré Keahi, and Yiyi Mendoza.
